Maryland Campaign /5
GCACW: ANV AAR 10th September
FROM J CORPS
TO ARMY HQ
Genl, this morning I have ordered Genl Jones to cover the crossing of the Monocacy on the road West from Mt Carmel with his division, leaving sufficient troops in Frederick to maintain order, while Genl Lawton moves with his division to cover the crossing at Frederick Junction.
Genl Hill, recently under arrest, has been ordered to resume his place at the head of his division and move toward Mt Zion Church West of Frederick City, where he will be positioned to undertake a march on Harpers Ferry or, if required, to counter any Federal movements to force a crossing of the Monocacy South of Frederick Junction.

MSG FROM LONGSTREET BEFORE MOVE/COMBAT.
Dear General Lee,
I write to you to inform you of the current activities of my corps
All three of the great responsibilities you have given me are being seen to by the brigades you chose, though I must admit I fear the attrition my brigades may suffer on their hastened journeys, I have great faith though that Windsor and Hagerstown will fall into our hands. The fate of Martinsburg is uncertain to me at this time, I can only hope my brigades meet with success.
I have assigned a small force I had spare to aid in the defence of the river line at Frederick, and have notified General Jackson to this effect. My headquarters shall be West of Frederick at Shook.
With God’s grace we shall succeed in throwing off Kind Abe’s tyranny and prevail as free men.
Your obedient servant,
General James Longstreet
Army of Northern Virginia

FROM CAV CORPS
TO ARMY HQ
General Lee,
My best compliments to you and your staff. I have implemented your orders for the day, here follow the reports from my subordinate units.
7VA & Lee’s Bde:
West/NW of Mount Airy. Conducting patrols East/SE. Detected patrols from 6 US Cavalry at 0110 and 0111.
12VA:
Patrolling the plains between the Monocacy PO and Edward’s Ferry. Spotted cavalry patrols belonging to 8 IL, 2km NW of Poolesville.
Hampton’s Bde:
At Hyattstown with my HQ. Patrolling between Clarksburg and Bennett Creek. Nothing to report.
Munford’s Bde:
At Barnesville, patrolling between Beallsville and forests surrounding Tennile Creek. Nothing to report.
REMARKS
All units full strength and well rested.
The Yankee forces appear to be in no great hurry. I have yet to encounter anything but scattered cavalry patrols.
FUTURE INTENTIONS
I will maintain my current dispositions. Moving the 7VA further South to look for Reno’s IX Corps. If I see that Hooker’s I Corps is moving North, I will screen Longstreet. If Hooker is moving South, I will attempt to raid the Mt Airy depot behind him. [Lee notes, this was NOT requested or suggested or part of General Orders. :) ]
My Headquarters will remain at Hyattstown for the foreseeable future. Please relay these details to General Longstreet.
